Hi all, there's a very old thread on here circa 2011 that mentions there is a PDF available of an old Total Vauxhall guide to repairing rear arches. The link doesn't work anymore and the time has come for me to have a stab at doing my arches so does anyone have the pdf? :cry

Hi Joner

I think that's now not available I tried to find it myself a good few years ago. Robsey can enlighten me of course he might know where it is? :thumb

It's not too bad a job to do tbh, the messy bits come when you're at the back of the sills where it'll likely need a bit of work and the bumper hanger area if they are crusty. If you're handy with a welder should be well within your capabilities.

Cheers

Andy

Thanks both, I'll let you know how I get on. After having another look the arches on my SRi that I thought were shot, they may actually be salvageable. I'll get some pictures up at the weekend to see what you guys think. Would be nice to avoid welding as I've only ever done it once and that was in a college workshop

Just work through the layers methodicallly.
And keep all off-cuts for reference / patterns.

People have told me many times...
Do a lot of practice with scrap metal, until you reach a standard you are happy with.
Then you can start attacking the car.
Just take your time - rushing will turn it into a dogs dinner.

Like you, my welding days were at college age.
Aged 16 going on 17 - dare I say in 1984 / 85, using electric arc, gas welding and brazing.
I have used gas-less mig a few times - my attempts in 2007 were much better than my recent attempts, but I am sure practice will help.

I agree, practice and more practice :)
Gasless mig is a godsend for the home welder, lidl regularly sells flux cored wire really cheap.

Couple of tips, fill a washing up liquid squeezy bottle with water and keep it at arms length to put out any flames, wear a cap unless you want to go prematurely bald :D

Still haven't got round to starting mine yet. Would be great to see a step by step on here if someone is planning to do their arches soon 👍🏼

I did a bit of a write-up on James' V6 CDX.

Page 12 shows the majority of what was done.
