Re: Lets see your computer
Cool idea for a thread Dan!
I built this one a while back. I've changed the internals a bit since its original inception but today its:
Intel Quadcore Q8400 @2.66Ghz
6GB Corsair DDR3 RAM
Asus P5K Deluxe motherboard
ATI Radeon HD 2600 gfx card
M-Audio Delta 44 Soundcard and breakout box
Roland UM3G Midi interface
1500GB total hard disk(s) capacity (all super fast disk drives)
LG Lightscribe DVDRW
Windows 7 64 Bit O/S
24" Samsung SyncMaster monitor
OCZ Stealth Xtreme 600W Power Unit
Housed in humungous CoolerMaster Cosmos brushed aluminum case,
soundproofed,
7 super quiet internal fans,
dedicated air channel guide "thermal technology"(!),
6 detachable HDD carriers,
5 detachable disk drive/CDROM style carriers,
integrated eSATA, firewire, usb, etc etc etc.
Basically it's really big but quiet.
I've probably forgotten some bits but you get the gyst anyway.

Rarely use the pc these days, mainly use the tab. Workstation PC gets caned by wife and sprog, Athlon xp3000, built 8 years ago and long overdue replacement. Also have a dual core pentium server in the loft dishing out media to a selection of sff desktops around the house.

Install something like PC Wizardf from CPUID. That'll tell you, think I'm sitting on 3 or 4 256's that I no longer require..Cavalier342 wrote:Pretty sure it's 1, although I don't know what the difference in the two is.Envoy CDX wrote:DDR1 or 2?Cavalier342 wrote:I'm not a nerd by any means, I know the basics and I can tell you my machine's specs:

Re: Lets see your computer
I get a fair chunk of stuff off a mate of mine who spends thousands on pcs, his castoffs are better than most peoples best, most of the time i never need to lift a finger he takes great joy in playing with pc's and will happily spend hours tinkering with mine just because he can
he has 100meg broadband and I use it to hunt for the best clubs in manchesters canal street so I can dance in my tutu.

Re: Lets see your computer
one of the guys at work is like that. you mention in passing that you could really do with a faster processor or a new monitor or a laptop or something and then then next day you go into work its sitting on your desk, a gift on 'permanent loan'. bizarre, but very welcome!Gaz wrote:I get a fair chunk of stuff off a mate of mine who spends thousands on pcs, his castoffs are better than most peoples best, most of the time i never need to lift a finger he takes great joy in playing with pc's and will happily spend hours tinkering with mine just because he can

Re: Lets see your computer
i have some ancient dell inspiron 640m laptop but 1gb or memory that i put in as it was only a 256 in there, other than that,no idea and it needs a new battery.
Re: Lets see your computer
Think I am running the oldest, slowest lap-top in the world
Mine is an ex-works Dell Latitude LS notebook with a 12" screen.
Runs at a super fast Pentium III 495Mhz... yep mega-hertz not gigahertz - lol
Ram is a maximum capacity 256 Mb
and my Hard-drive is a huge 6 Gb.
It has one USB socket - non-high speed,
and I tie myself to my modem with a 10ft long ethernet cable.
Still fast enough to run the tinterweb, and my various spread-sheets car files and general junk, with no particular loss of download speed or anything.
I have had to buy a new motherboard (£19) and a base plastic with palm-rest (£26), after the dogs keep knocking it off the arm of my chair in the lounge.
I defy anyone to declare a more basic / slower set-up.
(Google Images picture)
I do have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P Tower system in my office / junk room.
It is a Pentium 4 driven unit operating at 3.4 Gigahertz... 1 Gig Ram and 250 Gb Hard-drive... total rubbish, that cost far too much.
It is so crap.. dodgey video card and I/O control board.. that it is turned on about once per month at the most... mainly for printing photos..
I have to turn it on twice,
The first time, the screen signal drops off and I get a lovely blank screen...
on the second fire up the screen stays on, and I can see what I am doing.
sure the geeks amongst you will know the problem, but I cannot be arsed to waste my little brain content on it. I suspect only a new motherboard and video card are the only proper cure...
(Google Images picture) Until then, I will stick with my funky little LS.

Re: Lets see your computer
mines stuffed in the glovebox it's a pretty damn slow celeron 1ghz that over time and being bashed about now reports it runs at 736mhz :/ 512mb ram and a 80gb hdd (the dvd drive is gone) it runs a stripped xp that boots up as fast as i can get it too and loads straight into a touchscreen interface for playing music I got off've http://mp3car.com
with the car having being off the road for so long i pulled it all out so it wouldn't get damp, hopefully i can cobble together something faster form old spares but there is a physical size and power restraint..

Re: Lets see your computer
tbh, I've built a slower pc, just waiting to get a 7" touchscreen for the same purpose, but I'm running stipped linux as it boots quicker than XP, found something that does everything I need except satnav... so I'm packing maps!
