Re: Let's see your computer
I use a Kindle Fire HD 32GB for a lot of casual web browsing. It's probably the best gift I've ever received (Mrs Humbucker bought me one as a birthday present a couple of years back). I read a lot, and the Kindle's Amazon integration - specifically the thousands of books and movies available for free download - combined with its 'son of Chrome' browser and familiar Android interface make this particular tablet a fantastic all-rounder at a stupidly good price when compared to the iPad etc. It's just so versatile. I have mine fired up and streaming digital radio or Netflix when I'm in the garage working on the car, but Kindle Fire HD also has a decent built-in camera and it can run virtually any app (Android).
What's more, when I registered my Kindle for use, I was surprised to see it instantly start downloading digital versions of every CD I'd ever bought from the Amazon store. That was an unexpected-but-welcome feature, as is the fact that all files are automatically stored in the cloud (at no extra cost), enabling you to dump media on and off of your Kindle's hard disk if you happen to be venturing somewhere that doesn't have a wifi connection.
I also use an iPad2 for testing responsive website layouts and apps, but the Apple device is crap in comparison to my Kindle. The iPad's virtual keyboard is clunky and less than user friendly, and the unit's price tag is just daft when you consider what you get for less than half the cost with the Kindle Fire HD package.

Think I'll be using something a bit more portable soon, but we shall see.

Apple is way overated and way to expensive. They advertise there product beautifully and from this the product sells. Its like video calling, Apple rebranded an old hat feature that didnt take off, put it through the apple bullshit advertisement abd now we have facetime. Wahoo!
Apple could litterally sell a dead horse or maybe an 'Apple Core'

Re: Let's see your computer
My PC received a bit of an upgrade yesterday.
I finally relented and bought a new GPU:
It's an EVGA GTX970 SSC ACX2.0+ edition.
Also had a few minor upgrades since I last posted here. I'm now on 16GB or RAM (still the same Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz stuff), new Corsair fan which is much more aesthetically pleasing and an Asus PCE-AC56 wireless card.
Now if you'll excuse me I've got some games to catch up on, I'll see you in the spring!

Re: Let's see your computer
I like the idea of gaming (SW Battlefront, Project Cars and Battlefield 4 tickle my fancy), but I'm under the impression that modern gaming requires a healthy broadband connection. I get download speeds of 0.75mbps. It's a wonder that we can watch Netflix (no, not in HD!), so I think that any ideas I have about gaming are out of the question. Not that I have the time anyway. Sheesh.
Nice work on the PC, James.

It's not the gaming that requires a good internet connection but the downloading of the game itself.humbucker wrote:I like the idea of gaming (SW Battlefront, Project Cars and Battlefield 4 tickle my fancy), but I'm under the impression that modern gaming requires a healthy broadband connection. There are a ton of great modern games that don't require the internet:
Bioshock infinite
Tomb Raider 2013 (and the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider)
Fallout 4
GTA V
Civilisation V
Far Cry 4
Crysis 3
The Witcher 3
Pretty much all the games I play don't require the internet, apart from StarCraft II. The big killer is downloading the game, Fallout 4 for example is a 30GB game, pretty much all of which you have to download even if you buy the DVD version. GTA V is another killer at 60GB, but at least you can get the whole game on disk and only have to download updates.
I'm really not into multiplayer games like call of duty or battlefield.

That's a sound card??? It's bigger than my sodding processor tower. Or is that just a blown-up image?
Regarding broadband speeds, this is what I just got according to Speedsim.net:
I heard that BT broadband isn't good apparently, they were on the news recently.

Re: Let's see your computer
Ouch. 1.43Mb/s is nasty.
Nice speeds for you though Andrei, fiber optic I'm guessing.
I've been considering getting it myself as it is available in my area but my regular broadband speed isn't too bad:
That's a serious piece of hardware you've got yourself there Dan.
Do you do audio editing work then?

My speeds are similar to Humbucker.
Download = 1.36 Mb/s
Upload = 0.62 Mb/s
Sky Broadband on a BT Landline.

Re: Let's see your computer
That's a pretty good upload speed actually. ISPs always prioritise download over upload as that is more important for the average user.
Are you on fibre or regular ADSL2+ broadband because that's a cracking download speed for a non-fibre connection. You must live pretty close to the exchange.

Re: Let's see your computer
I'm very tempted to look at fibre to increase the upload speed. A days photography event can take upwards of 24 hours to upload to my website

they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"
