Light should come on on start up as it self checks, then go out unless there is a fault.

check the fuse box and see if fuse 19 is in and not blown, must be a reason why the bulb has been removed from the dash, blown transferbox most likely or accumulator bulb dead.

As you look at the engine its to right on the fire wall ,
looks like black bulb connected to hydraulic block

Best try this site
http://www.cav16.co.uk/
This will help

If it is gone t@ts up best lock it as gsi pie say not hard to do

no way it should spin front wheels only, if its not the fuse most likely be blown oil seals in the transfer box, like many have said, do away withe the complicated hydraulic system, and go for a locked box for permanent four wheel drive, i did this on my cav tubby, as have a lot of other people with cav turbos, its one of the best mods i have done, car sticks to the road, Ads

If the light isn't coming on with the ignition then the bulb has been removed or is blown. If fuse 19 is blown/ removed light is on permanently. Most likely as said, blown accumulator and prob txb seals also. The death of many a 4x4 especially as I see its been lowered 60mm- guaranteed to kill it. For reference, it is impossible with the 2.0 8v to get ANY wheelspin on the road- it simply doesn't have the power. Snow, gravel and grass however, is much different, much more fun and yes, the back will then step out :D. Nio matter how much abuse i give mine, only ever had the back step out in the snow.

Early ones didn't have a white ring, they only started putting a ring on the bulb after they recalled them. The ring is only present on the revised bulbs. If it didn't receive the recall or has subsequently been fitted with an old spec bulb it won't have a white ring.
