Proper induction kits are the best, where there is least heatsoak. A replacement performance filter should help though.

would need forced induction and properly heat shielded enclosed filter to see any gains... Had this argument with so many people as I always stick a cone on...
If its a bit more bark you want... cone filter with direct cold feed... If its more bite/power you want... do a LET conversion

Can only comment on the cone filter... Although I had a pipercross...
Better pedal response, Bit more induction noise... No real difference on economy...

Re: Replacement Filter OR Indution Kit?
I have a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox with the resonator removed underneath and the splash guards behind the headlight removed and first time I drove it after chucking the filter in I thought the roar was the exhaust blowing but they really do add a deeper induction roar and free a horsepower or two..
