Re: tickover
20NE engine? Idle control valve sounds familiar here, it's the metallic cylinder with a couple of hoses attached to it just above the cam cover, next to the throttle body. Might just need taking off and cleaning with carb cleaner.

Re: tickover
Could be Idle valve, vacumm leak, air leak at manifold, ecu pwm circuit
....with a brew and my favourite biscuits.
Re: tickover
Starting with the idle control valve, simply unplug it's connector whilst the engine is running.
If it is faulty, the revs will rise and smooth out to a steady 850 to 900 rpm (book says about 880).
When you re-plug it back in, the engine should cut out.
If the idling does not stabilise, I would look at an induction leak.
between the throttle body and manifold is a favourite.
As Troy mentions there are plenty of vacuum pipes too.
Anything else should throw up an engine light.
- sluggish / slow switching lambda / oxygen sensor.
- dirty / air flow meter,
- faulty throttle position sensor etc.
Other than that some 20NE / C20NEs are known to have a lumpy idle from the factory.
Planetc will tell you many dealers were asked to increase tick over on some engines to smooth out lumpiness.

Re: tickover
Just like to advise caution cleaning the idle motor.
When I did some while ago,it made it worse and I had
to buy a new one. Not cheap.

Re: tickover
The problem of spraying a cleaner into the valve is that there is no seal to prevent it getting into the operating end where the coils and bearing is.
I cleaned mine initially like this but ended up taking it apart, can be done by 'un crimping' the end, the inards can then be cleaned properly.
Retaining the end was achieved by potting the 4 crimp areas with araldite.
Been OK for years now!
