1995 Cavalier 1.7TD Isuzu Engine - Valve Shims Availability

Post by Mr_Mike »

I could do with replacing 5 of the valve shims in my 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.7TD Isuzu engine.

I'm looking for 5 shims:

3 off 2.60 mm (Part Number 94143399)
1 off 2.82 mm (Part Number 94480547) and
1 off 3.08 mm (Part Number 97209060.

The local Vauxhall dealer has disposed of his stock a couple of years back. Can anyone suggest elsewhere to try? I don’t mind new or used (in good condition).

Thank you

If your clearances aren't too far out your local
machine shop can surface grind your shims.
I had some done and haven't had any problems.

Thanks TheGriffin.

I've managed to buy the 2.60 mm and 3.08 mm shims by ringing round most of the Vauxhall dealers.

I just need the 2.82 mm shim (Part Number 94480547).

Surface grinding a shim is a last resort. It shouldn't matter how much is taken off as long as you only do one side, and ensure that when installed, the resurfaced side is place face down in the bucket, so that the cam acts on the untouched, case hardened side.

There's no problem machining the shims. My engine
reconditioners told me that's what they always do
when adjusting valve clearances.

I assumed that surface grinding a shim would be expensive.

Any recommendations where I can get this done?

I was charged a fiver each for two shims which was
nearly half the cost of a new shim at the time .
I don't know where you are so can only recommend
near me in East Dorset if that's any help.
Otherwise use Yellow Pages.

I had the same problem last year. Some dealers just don't want to know and will say they are no longer available. All they have to do is order them in. I paid about £5 each. I have a full list of part numbers somewhere including the ones not available or superseded. You can go down the grinding route if you have a reputable head specialist or engineering place near you. I had the inlet valves replaced on mine and the guides sleeved last November.

There is also a Vauxhall dealer trade member over on VXON (he's the one that provided me with the part list). He should be able to help :)
