annoying rumble... help needed.

Post by Peanut_119 »

Right guys, Ive got a annoying rumble coming from my near side front, hardly there when car is cold. But once ive drove for say 10 minutes I can hear it.
Ive done the usual checks, bearing shafts, everything it tight etc etc.

Now... it doesnt get worse if your turning (stay the same)
It still does it if I press the clutch and roll.
Doesnt get worse when I break.

Any idea's. I noticed it when I changed my wheels over to my slabs and at the same time I fitted a new inner CV and fresh gearbox oil.

Silly question indeed, but are the wheel bolts tight enough? I've had it before, it wasn't rumbling but making a weird scraping sound..... Checked everything, turned out to be wheel bolts lol.

It wasnt making any noise before the change. Would a diff suddenly make noise like that?

Wheel nuts are tight as I thought it might of been the tyres on the front so I swapped them to the back to rule them out.

No, probably not I suppose, but you changed the oil in the box so something is different. Maybe get it in the air with the wheels turning and have a listen.

What box oil have you used? I used Halfords 75/80 in my f16 and it rumbled till I changed it with vauxhall box oil.

Ep 80/90. The same stuff ive always used.

Could a brand new cv cause a rumble? Thats the only thing I have changed and not rechecked. I obviously checked it when I fitted it to the shaft it seemed a nice fit and I greased it up. I might be over thinking it now as its beginning to do my head in when im driving.

If it turns out to be the gearbox/diff I will just change it for my spare one. Just trying to rule out everything else first

If your changing just the diff Be carefull, Mark it and count the number of turns to remove. There is a preload that needs to be set.

The official method of setting preload involves a weight and a piece of string and is an absolute pain in the backside.

Try putting front wheels on back and the back wheels to the front and see if the noise moves I had same problem at work not so long ago with a freelander turned out to be the tyres

Yeah i would try swapping wheels to rule them out.

My van seems to do this too, makes a kind of rumble/loud humming noise in a straight line but if i turn the wheel slightly its silent, strange.

Ive tried swapping wheels. Even put the ones I had before on. Rumble still there.

Changed the wheel bearing aswel today. Rumble still there.

Can worn brake disks cause it? Ive ordered new ones 1 to rule them out and 2 it will need them soon anyway.

It is being narrowed down to the diff. Could a new cv rumble?
Just want to rule out everything before doing the gearbox.

Seem to have sorted the rumble.

Only bad news is I dont know what it was. Today its had 2 front wheel bearings, 2 inner cv joints, new disks and a gearbox change.

Initial test drive to make sure everything was ok went well and I could hear/feel the rumble.
