Reduce weight

the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

To be honest you'll probably get a similar answer from most folk. Without spending money you won't get anywhere, you can try performance panel filters and sports exhausts etc, but unless you're willling to spend a bit on re-mapping etc, it probably won't be much worth the hassle.

Anything that helps the engine breath, as Andrei says. Cheapest performance increase comes from reducing weight though. Reduction of unsprung weight also has an added bonus of helping handling. Logic says if you can knock 25% off it then you effectively improve the power to weight ratio by 25%....... and it's free.

Press the accelerator down a bit more. That usually works.

Oh, and changing up a gear does the trick as well, I find.
Never use another Cav driver as guidance to a destination, unless you REALLY want to explore the country.
