It may be just excessive movement in gear linkages, or the clutch is a little out of adjustment.

Recently my 1st and 2nd gear went, and this turned out to my gear linkage going too slack.
There is a thread on here about it.
Clutch adjustment is easy and free to do it yourself.

I run my 1994 cavalier with 214,000 miles on the clock on the original transmission fluid and original power steering fluid...obviously all other fluids are service items, and have been changed as required.

To drop gear oil out requires the bottom plate to be unbolted from the gearbox so that the fluid can seep out.
Then tighten and refil to "level" point, which is a bolt hole near one of the drive shafts...fill the gearbox until oil starts to run out of the level plug hole.
Refit hole plug /bolt...job done.

only changed my clutch at about 180,000 miles, so in my calculations, you've got ages yet...
