Re: stupid electric windows
Might just be the motors that are seized up a bit. If moisture or dampness gets inside, it can corrode some parts and mess up electric connections. If i were to play my card, i'd remove the door panels just to have a peek Hope this helps mate

Re: stupid electric windows
If the motors are ok, check all electric contacts, fuses, wiring etc. Make sure its all solid and rigged up and give everything a bit of WD-40.
my best advice.

Re: stupid electric windows
Well i've never mucked about with them but i would imagine like most other parts, giving it a live 12V wire feed should make it work. I'm not very technically minded, but i'm trying to think. I hope someone else knows more than me mate.

Re: stupid electric windows
check to see if the window runners are still straight as my driver side tends to pop out at the top and causes th window to go down again.
Re: stupid electric windows
If you have an intermittent fault...as it does sound like, then I would do the following: -
1) Undo the connector between the drivers and passengers front doors, and check that all pins and sockets are clean...nut rusty or full of oxidation...powdery green on copper pins, orange on steel pins.
coat the connectors with vaseline (white petroleum jelly) and re-connect the plugs..this will prevent ingress of moisture.
2) Check all brown wires and their attachments to the grounding points...just plain browns, not those with coloured stripes (they will be door-lock and full closure wires).
3) Remove your door inner trims and peel back the plastic sheeting. (carefully - don't want to tear the membranes).
Now feel around for the connectors for the window mechanisms...unplug and look at the condition of the pins...looking for corrosion...also check that none of the wires are chaffed or snapped.
Clean all the plugs and pins as best you can. Again coat with vaseline.
4) On the rear doors, the loom passes through rubber tubing. The earth point for the rear doors is just inside near the sill panel...again check all your chassis earths (browns again!!).
5) Regarding the motors themselves, try operating these and apply some assistance by gripping the glass...do not do this from inside the door...you may get caught / injured in the mechanism.
6) Check replace the main fuses for these windows with new / known good items, just incase the fuses are defunct or starting to go awol.
7) Finally generally keep you battery well charged!!!
Other than this, just check that the mechanisms and window guides are clean, not too tight and are not twisted or bent in any way.

Re: stupid electric windows
Have we had any success with this yet???
If so, what was the actual problem?..

Re: stupid electric windows
Anyjoy?
Sounds like a dickey connection - unless they are working when its particularly hot and such - if thats the case the motors need worked back in and seriously lubed up.

Re: stupid electric windows
On my GSI I replaced the circuit board that controls the 1 touch up & down of the window, it's in the black box mounted on the electric motor where the door loom plugs in. There are 4 little torx head screws that hold it in, once undone it should just slide out. It's unusal for the motors to go

Re: stupid electric windows
Have you taken the door cards off and checked the connections?
I'd give the mechanism a good greasing and try again.
Is it a case of they start to open then stop? Or do they work for a bit then refuse to work again?

Re: stupid electric windows
Inoperative windows have never stopped me from driving anywhere. It's not your motor that's letting you down, it's one small component that is faulty. Get that door panel off and check the motor and wiring connections. That's the best advice.show n shine wrote:yeah they work when they want to then decide that thats enuf !!!

Re: stupid electric windows
They all stop together or seperately? Older motors commonly have control unit failures, which is built into the regulator /motor assembly. If they individually play up this would be a strong possibility. If they all stop together then start tracing feeds and earths.
