Since my parents bought the Cavalier (it's actually an Opel Vectra here in Europe) this thing has been mounted on the dashboard, below the steering wheel, right next to the fuse box. I have no idea what it is or what it's for, it actually doesn't even seem to be connected to anything, the LED on it has never lit up. I've seen it on other Cavs as well but mounted in different locations, so it's probably aftermarket. Any ideas?
The symbol on the bottom is for "Meta" alarms.
So it is an educated guess that it was something to do with an aftermarket alarm installation.
I know a lot if Italian car manufacturers (Fiat / Lancia / Alfa Romeo) used to fit Meta alarms to their vehicles.
I think Meta later became part of the "Toad Install" group.
As a coincidence, I have a Meta alarm in my Cavalier... fitted in March 1996 by "Toad Install" - requested by me, not by Vauxhall.
It still works well despite being 19 years old.
When wired up correctly to the alarm and immobiliser, it stops the car from being started.
So hopefully stopping people from stealing your car.
You would have a little stick type thing that plugs into the slot.
The car will only start with the stick plugged in.
No stick = no start.
I am guessing that a previous owner has lost the stick, or it went faulty.
He will have then had the immobiliser circuit bypassed so that he can still start the car.
