Removing and installing heated seat floor plugs

Post by Metallicav »

I spent a bit of time before and I've removed the black/yellow and black/red wires that plug into the big connector behind the passenger side kickpanel.
The two brown wires (one from each plug) need to be removed but they go into another wrapped bunch of wires. Where do these go and how are they separated from the plugs dash side?

What are the two brown wires for? I would have thought they were simply ground wires but they're two different shades and why would they disappear so far into the loom?

Okay - The loomage is as follows: -
(1992 onward loom - earlier loom is similar).

From the main fuse box.
Black wire (ignition live from fuse 2)
Grey / green wire (illumination live from fuse 9).

These go to the switches in the dash.

Switch pin 1 - Brown to chassis.
(Both switches).
Switch pin 2 -
black / red switched live to X6 pin 32 (left switch).
black / yellow switched live to X6 pin 4 (right switch).
Switch pin 3 - black ignition live from fuse 2 (both switches).
Switch pin 4 - grey / green illumination live from fuse 9 (both switches).

As said, you will have two wires to passenger footwell connector X6

From passenger footwell, along the passenger side sill to the bottom of the b pillar.

Across to the centre console and back out to each seat mat.
From the seat mat to ground.

Regarding the switch ground - it is my assumption that they will be long enough to go to the grounding point behind the left side of the instrument cluster.
But it doesn't really matter where they go as long as they go to any good chassis ground point.

different shade of brown - no particular reason for that - one is probably just dirtier/ dustier than the other.

To remove the female Lucar / Spade connectors from the switch socket,
You need to poke a small jewellers flat bladed screwdriver behind the flat side of the metal connector.
Insert the screwdriver from the wire end of the connector.

I use a 1.4mm screwdriver for releasing most connectors from moulded sockets.

I think I understand now, the reason the ground disappears into the loom behind the dash is because it goes to a ground behind the clocks.

I'm removing the floor loom from the 95 LS into the 92 L, so all I have to do is connect the live wires to their places in the X6 which I've taken a photo of and noted, then connect the ground wires that I'll cut from the plugs and ground them.

The ground on the box section underneath the passenger seat will be good enough won't it?

Yes - a ground is a ground.
So that will be fine.

Always good to check.
A second opinion always helps, even if you are confident of what you are doing.

My pleasure :cool
