The loss of a friend.

The loss of a friend.
I don't normally do RIP threads, but this is Vauxhall related.
For anyone who visits Opcomusers, VxON and several other Vauxhall forums,
You may have heard about the sudden passing of my dear friend Kevin, who usually goes by the name Fire26662.
A very knowledgable chap who was also a CavMk3OC forum member and Cavalier mk3 owner up until a couple of years ago.
My main dealings with him was the setting up of the OpCom forum in 2011.
He supplied the web space, I provided the forum and How 2 guides.
I am still an admin there, but nowhere near as active as I am on here.
I have no idea what illness took him, but it was said to be quick and relatively unexpected.
I wish his family and friends the strength of heart and spirit to see them through this sad period.

Re: The loss of a friend.
Thanks Andrei.
I'd like to say that you would have probably found him fascinating to talk to.
He had a background in motor-racing, including some very dangerous test-track driving experiences...
and some crazy qualification in astrophysics -
but he was a totally down to earth, no nonsense chap.

Re: The loss of a friend.
Sorry to hear of your loss Rob.
Re: The loss of a friend.
As a "closure" to this thread, it has now been agreed by the admin team to close the "Opcomusers" forum.
The site host has been advised to make preparations to wind-up the forum, server and the database.
But it is not certain when the plug will be pulled.
The end of an era lasting 9 years and almost 4 months.
Update - it has now been formally declared that the site will be switched off on 21st March 2021.
Not far short of what I predicted.
(I think I quoted about Easter time).

Re: The loss of a friend.
Yep - it has...
A whole week early.
I was told that it would be the 21st (next Sunday),
I logged in at 10:30 am yesterday (13th) and it was still there.
At 7:30 pm it was gone - poof!!
The end of an era for me... but hey ho, no point dwelling on the past.

Re: The loss of a friend.
A bit of a bummer it was closed down a week early, did not get a chance to say goodbye to the rest of the admin team.
A bit of a strange month, i have had to delete 2 of the oldest bookmarks in my already short list of bookmarks. First Opcomusers and then the link to my webmail for a mail address i have had for 20 years. (Had alway been free, but suddenly the price went from free to £85 a year, which seemed a bit excessive)
ill be seeing you guys around the wild-wild-web ...

Re: The loss of a friend.
Yes - I felt the same way.
At least you know where we all are.
Vexorg and myself are here.
Mark and Mick (Valer) are over on VxON and the various Astra forums.
As for emails...
Hmm strange that anyone would charge you for email hosting.
Sign of the times, I suppose.

I know where to find them, but still...Would have been nicer to be able to say goodbye and all that (Drink a goodbye beer on the last night of the opcom forum )
Yeah, they are crazy. I knew this would happen. About 5 years ago they bought out a lot of Internet service providers mail servers, the ISP's did not want to do email servers anymore, and they took over all of these mail adresses and domain's with a promise to keep the service free.
First they changed the price to £2 a month if you wanted pop3, but webmail was still free. Now everyone is forced to use the premium subscription for a service that can best be described as lacking, with multiple day long down times.
I began moving everything to the new mail a few months ago, and my parents i will start to move over soon. And they were even paying the £2 so instead of getting more money, they will now get less.
Their loss...Their spam filter was shite anyway.
