Private plates

I've checked the DVLA website, and I think I'm right in saying that a car needs an MOT in order to have a cherished/transferred plate applied to it? Anyone here had success in trying to apply a new plate to a car that is SORN'd without a current MOT certificate (I let mine expire)? I'm guessing not, but you never know...

You can transfer the number off an mot'd car and put it on a retention certificate though

Yeah, but it'll cost half the value of the plate just to put it on retention, and then I bet I'd have to pay again to transfer it onto the car! I'll bide my time!
