Hi saw this on an old post on mig web and though about under bonnet temp getting high when you put your foot down its ok having cooling but you need somewhere for the hot air to go as cold air pases through front of your car and rad it then becomes hot air and has limited palces for it to escape.
So I saw this and thought it would be a good idea but was wondering how deep to put the cut in the bonnet ie making the scoop 2 3 inches deep if you get me what is the clearance between the bonnet and engine when the bonnet is closed on a standard unmodified bonnet ? cheers

Something like this.

Here's the post I was reading.

You could make a cardboard template, gaffer tape it to the underside of the hood, close it and see if it makes contact...

Your running an xe not a v12!

It will never get hot enough to need that.

Good point to be fair... Unless you're in the middle of July and trying to pull a heavy trailer up hill.. it may not be necessary.

I reckon the best bet is to insulate the air intake as best as possible to avoid heatsink with a nice cold air feed.

To be honest the cav that has had this done isn't a v12 it looks good and helps with cooling just like im having my 421 exhaust manifold ceramic coated

What's the car used for?

I've got to be honest and say none of my XE's ever suffered from excess heat even in a Corsa or Astra.

If you like the look of it then go for it but I'd be concerned about water ingress onto electrical parts.

Fan, HT leads, Plugs, Etc etc. Water will get everywhere. If you like the look of it make the vent but box it in so there's no holes for air flow.

Could always incorporate some sort of shield that drains water away from the leads and plugs, etc. Have a mesh external shield on the scoop, and a flat sheet of something on the underside to deflect water to drain around the engine instead of straight down onto it.. Far as i can see there are 3 draw-backs, one being it may make contact with something in the engine bay if not done right, 2, it will look silly when the bonnet is up, and 3, on very cold days it may not be good for it as a good fast warm-up is essential.

Not good.... But if Evo's, Shelby Series 1 and some others can get away with it, then there must be a way. Granted that the Cavaliers are a lot more basic in the engine bay, and not as covered in plastic panels as newer cars, but still, where there's a will, there's a way.
