How cheap is petrol...

How cheap is petrol...
Just put some fuel in the 206 at our local Asda, 117p a litre.
Not seen it that low for years.

Re: How cheap is petrol...
Most of the major supermarkets dropped their prices recently to do with the falling oil prices, probably why it seems cheap.
1.26 here for super unleaded at the moment, less for regular.

Typical price in Manchester -
Supermarket unleaded = 119.7 to 121.9
Premium brands = 120.9 to 123.9
Diesel averages approx 4 to 5p more per litre.
In Ellesmere Port / Eastham / Birkenhead, which is much closer to the shell refinery,
Prices are approx 2p dearer than Manchester.
Yes prices at the pump are cheaper, but not by the same percentage of reduction that the oil companies pay.
They currently pay 25% less than the same time last year.
Not forgetting that 63p per litre is fuel duty.
Finally -did you know that all uk refineries make petrol and export to Europe.
Most if not all diesel is imported....

I treat supermarket gas stations like minefields. Not worth the risk...

There's a reason why they're so cheap... You get what you pay for nowadays.

Re: How cheap is petrol...
It depends upon the supermarket.
The high risk shops "were" Tescos, Asda and Morrisons.
Tescos had dirty diesel
My local Asda used to supply Unleaded without any "lead replacement" additives causing premature engine valve seat wear. The fuel station was removed for 5 years.
Morrisons were well known for putting too much bio-diesel in their diesel.
As far as I am aware, they have all packed in their dirty habits.
Sainsbury's has always been okay, and also competitively priced.
(In fact I once saw a Texaco tanker stocking the tanks).

Re: How cheap is petrol...
Doesn't matter what tanker delivers it to the forecourt, it's what additives or impurities are added to the liquid before it enters your tank. Cheap means cheap, but cheaper fuel means less responsibility is taken to ensure it is optimum.

Re: How cheap is petrol...
All unleaded sold in the uk has to conform to BS EN 228, supermarkets won't be any different. If their fuel was truely rubbish there would be millions of cars broken down at the side of the road, including my 206, the mrs 206 and the V6.l have been using supermarket petrol in all my cars & bikes since they first started selling it,(in the 80's?) And have had no issues caused.
No doubt there must be occsions where a bad batch occurs or it gets contanimated but thats not the same as a supermarket deliberately selling a bad product.
Are most of the "facts" about their fuel sourced from the internet, pub talk or " my mate said"?

Re: How cheap is petrol...
I can confirm that my information is correct and factual.
We had a few batches of bad fuel from Tesco's, which caused our Vectra-C CDTi to run really badly for a few weeks.
And yes - the petrol station was closed and removed from my local Asda after a successful prosecution.
Suffice to say that I avoided those fuel stations for several years.
The Morrison's info was based on a well documented series of customer complaints.
(Apparently late 90's VW diesels suffered the worst).

Re: How cheap is petrol...
Ive used supermarket fuel in all my cavs since ive been driving and never had an issue. From a 329bhp impreza to a 1 litre nova and various diesels all have been fine.

No, you don't. You get some of what you pay for these days...Cavalier342 wrote:There's a reason why they're so cheap... You get what you pay for nowadays.
Re: How cheap is petrol...
There is a difference between a local issue of bad fuel, be it contamination at the refinery or at the filling station and a nationwide problem of poor quality supermarket petrol.
I am only talking about petrol anyway as I have little experience with satans fuel(diesel) except for a clapped out Zx turbo diesel about 15 years ago that would probably have run on cooking oil if you asked it.
Having seen loads of modern diesels chuffing out black smoke , I probably will never have another one.

Re: How cheap is petrol...
I've always been able to tell the quality of fuel simply by how much the LS pinks when using different fuels.
Esso used to be the worst with consistently bad pinking
Places like Tesco Asda and even BP were a bit hit and miss.
Shell was pretty consistent when they had their fuel saver unleaded. I think I must have used it exclusively for about a year until they stopped stoking it as all my local garages. They've had that "temporarily unavailable" sign up for about 2 years now!
Nowadays I just use BP or shell super unleaded and the pinking is pretty much eliminated.

Re: How cheap is petrol...
Never had any pinking in mine Have you got the RON plug the right way round? Silly question but just a thought... Far as supermarket gasoline goes, I avoid them as I just don't trust stuff that comes off the shelf, so to speak. Fuel companies were selling gas from day one, supermarkets sell groceries. Wouldn't trust them as they probably have no idea what gasoline even is.
I stick to purpose-built companies myself.

She has had pinking since 80,000 miles, she's now on 197,000.
I've tried every conceivable fix to get rid of it and failed. I've now resigned myself to the fact that she simply doesn't want to be fixed.
One of these days I'll perform a top end rebuild.
I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't know what gasoline is, is that some sort of new heating gas perhaps?
Do you mean petrol perchance?
Re: How cheap is petrol...
