Any 2001 fans? (Machining, laser cutting, 3D printing...)

A live brief I'm currently working on for a client's book launch is to make a studio scale EVA Pod miniature from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

As I'm heavily using a mill, lathe, laser cutter and incorporating some 3D printing into the build I thought this may be interesting to some of you on here!

I know it's not a Cavalier but I remember a thread on here not long ago asking what everyone did for a job...

It's also largely shaped with car body filler!







Had to make my own cutter for this process...























The 3D printed window, modelled in Rhino and printed on the Ultimaker2.

Ultimately, for anyone who doesn't know, this is what it should look like...

I have used Rhino a few times...
I am sure that if I knew better how to use it, I could do some decent stuff.

At present -
We cast a person's body shape in a latex bean bag.
Scan it with a Fast Scan hand held laser unit.
Import and surface it into Rhino...lost track if it is version 4, 5 or whatever..
A few other programming tweaks

And then bang it into a basic 3 1/2 axis router tool running Rhino Cam 12 I think (???)
An hour later a bespoke pressure cushion is manufactured.

I know that I will never be able to create stuff like you have shown.

Thanks, it has been a good learning curve.

Drawing up that window was far from easy, spent a good 2/3 hours trying to figure it out, I'm still learning. The original was carved out of oak in the 50's, crazy.

We use tech similar to that too, but for different outcomes. Sounds like a cool idea, is it a type of treatment?

Fantastic stuff, I love being able to make stuff from scratch, it helps to have all the tools mind you. Earlier this year I made a Ghostbusters Proton pack from scratch.

It is so much easier from a scan than drawing from scratch.
I still get crazy headaches from the file manipulations.

We use it to produce supportive seating for people who have complex clinical conditions -people who cannot function properly without being supported in their wheelchair.
