Currently I pay £230 pa tax because, as with most of us, my car is over 1549cc. Many modern cars pay far less depending on the levels of CO2 emissions. Fair enough, you might say, but is it really ?

I've been doing some searching and I think we're being ripped-off again.

Bear with me and i'll explain. ( you might want to try this, just follow the links I'm posting & see what you get )

First I used an mpg calculator : http://www.mpg-calculator.co.uk/
This gave me a result of 40.19 mpg

Then I calculated CO2 from mpg : https://www.eta.co.uk/2010/02/22/calcul ... m-its-mpg/
This gave a CO2 emissions result of 168.2 g/km

As you can see, from the vehicle tax rate table : https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables
This should result in a band H rate of £205

I think under these circumstances our road tax would be greatly reduced, given an even playing field.

Wow your MPG figures are massively better than mine.

Typical MPG = 28.2
CO2 Emissions = 239.72

which is equivalent to-
Band L taxation = £485.00 for 12 months.
Eeek!!

I blame my poor MPG on the very heavy congestion on and around the M60 in Manchester
and the fact that I carry a lot of work related equipment...and Cavalier parts.

I'm also shocked by your figures but if they were calculated by the unrealistic methods in the last link, i.e. the way manufacturers legally cheat, and what the test actually is, I'm sure you would fare much better.
The sri ecotec I had would have come in at £265 @ 36 mpg, yet I'm now driving a cdx ecotec, wide ratio box instead of close ratio. (not that I like it being sooo slow)

Road tax should be stuck on fuel. More you drive or burn more it costs

I'm not complaining, it only costs £230pa to tax the 3 litre.

Very good point, to be honest I agree that we pay too much for older cars, but it's nice to know that I pay the same road tax rate for a 1.8 automatic as a 1980's Camaro or a Jap drifter type thing.

It really annoys me that I pay so much .
My diesel does over 55mpg so I cannot be damaging the planet that much .
