MOT's.. How much can you play with the rules

Post by Maracus »

...in this case, what I mean is, if you were to buy a car privately with no MOT, that is say, 100 miles from home, you have it booked in at your local MOT test station of preference, and drive it straight there from the previous owners house, are you driving it legally? (Assuming you're insured for it)

The only place you can drive your car to is the mot
Your car must be insured to do so also

Err... I think these requirements were covered in the question :?:
Websearch seems to say you can. It must be booked in for an mot, and the insurer may pay out less because the the car isn't mot'd but , apparently they can't void the insurance. I know it's not a fresh link but hope this helps : http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... pay+out%3F

You can actually drive it to a pre booked place of repair too I believe.

I agree.. I get a friend mechanic to do my MOT's and he does any repairs etc, and he says the same, it can be driven to the MOT center and back, regardless of result, or for repairs. I.e. to a garage. It's easier to have a contact number for the garage/s and some sort of reference number with you..

To drive without an mot is a 60pound fine. You can drive anywhere as long as its booked in and your not taking the piss.

That's what I mean... Where/how do they draw the line at "taking the piss"?

I'd say its ok, just might be a hassle if being pulled and having to explain the situation lol!

Your better of acting stupid and saying you didn't realise the mot had expired. Just make sure the tyres are ok

As already stated there is no maximum distance to travel to a pre booked MOT station. If you bought the car 100 miles away and MOT'd it down there. If it failed what would you do then?

Just make sure the car is visibly road worthy as in tyres etc, And that you do have a pre booked slot at an MOT station.

...I'd drive it home! See I've got an eye on a car that's going cheap with no mot, and it apparently drives. That's good enough for me, so long as the price is cheap enough pmsl!

Well that's breaking the law which would leave you open to a fine. You can drive it direct to you MOT station.....Not home.

I thought you were covered driving TO the MOT, but if it failed, you wouldn't be covered to drive it away.

No, it's to the center AND back, regardless of pass/failure.

Nearside rear seat belt has failed on mine. The replacement unit I've got works only on the front. I've heard that if I take off the rear seat backrest ("disabling" the seat) before submitting for the MOT then that removes the need for the seat belt to work (!). Obviously I'd prefer some kind person to offer me the correct replacement seat belt unit, but if all else fails ...

I believe you are right, if it's not there, then it cannot fail.... I think technically you are allowed to have just the driver's seat in, with belt fitted. But I may be wrong.

We'll find the correct bit... just have to find some time.

I think I was very lucky to find an eBay replacement from a breakers down B'ham way which looks as if it's up to the mark avoiding the need to bend the MOT rules hopefully. Next 2 weeks = MOT time will tell!

You are joking of course. Hassle with getting the replacement bodyside mouldings (see post about Vx Green Parts) to adhere probably due to adhesive deterioration over time. Hassle to get rid of the old adhesive to permit garage to use new double sided tape. They are trying as I write this ... Not that this should affect the rules as far as this month's MOT is concerned.
