That doesn't sound a recommended method of drinking tea.

Online taxation is only dearer than via the post office or dvla office if you are paying by credit card.

I tax online using a debit card which currently carries no card fee nor "online charge".
Been doing it this way for about 5 years.

As for checking date of tax liability, this can already be done on the direct.gov site.
In the list of options for taxing or sorning, there is the option to make a vehicle enquiry.

As long as you do not make too many enquiries, it is free.

I do it via post office and debit card. It all goes up each bloody period anyway.

How the heck will that work if you are buying a second hand car privately? How will you prove if its got tax or not? There best be free database access!!

Also, apparently they will set it up so you can DD it monthly.. Does that mean tax will be effectively on a "pay as you use" basis?? Or will you have to commit to paying for 6 months tax, monthly? What if the car gets sold with "3 months tax" and then the old owner then fails to pay the last 3 months? Who's at fault then? Or will they automatically end a 'tax disk' duration on sale of the vehicle??
Can see this being one big money spinning ploy!

I beg to differ young Troy.

Maracus does have some good points there. If you're buying a car you need to know what tax period remains on the car. But then again you can check up with DVLA for free online anyway.

Online vehicle check isn't exactly up to date atm, that will need sorting so that it is updated as soon as changes are made to reflect tax status etc

Slight update on the topic:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25398499

Interesting point here is the SORN declaration, apparently when the changes come into effect, only one declaration needs to be made, instead of once per year.
