Re: 1994 Cavalier LSi C20NE (was C18NZ) Work-horse
Both the headlights and the indicators look to be non standard (and very nice!). Are they aftermarket HIDs or maybe even LEDs? Are these still available as bolt-in replacements for the standard front lights?

Re: SRi 20seh gearbox problem
If they mentioned that the input shaft was difficult to get out then they definitely were using the access hatch method to remove & replace the clutch. And yes, if they had to be a bit brutal to move the shaft (using a slide hammer attached to the end of the shaft?) then I guess they might have ...

Re: SRi 20seh gearbox problem
On further reflection, perhaps the garage is saying that, whatever the transmission fault was that caused you to seek a clutch renewal, it wasn't in fact the clutch at fault but was instead a gearbox fault - and that's why the gearbox needs repair or replacement.

Re: Southern english drivers
Growing up in the south east I've been a bit blind to it. But recently I have noticed that the driving standard here seems far worse than other places. It's the level of aggression that's different. Go to Suffolk and everyone drives with so much more space between them and at lower speeds. People h...

Re: SRi 20seh gearbox problem
Like others I'm struggling to see why a new gearbox is suddenly required because of difficulties with clutch replacement. If the gearbox was working OK before the clutch job was started it should still be OK now. I think you need to find out whether the garage has removed the gearbox to replace the ...

Certainly both my 1989 and 1993 Cavaliers had/have metal petrol tanks and the replacements I sourced were metal also. Maybe later ones went over to plastic

Re: 1994 Cavalier LSi C20NE (was C18NZ) Work-horse
Cavalier fuel tanks are fairly notorius for corroding through on their tops where water will lodge and not properly dry out - especially in our wet and salt laden winters. I've had to replace tanks on 2 Cavaliers now - I got my last one 2 or 3 years ago and it was sourced from Denmark, with no avail...

Regarding Robsey's comment on fuel pipes not being ethanol resistant, Esso Supreme 98 octane fuel is claimed to be ethanol free. I haven't seen the same claim for the Shell V-Power and BP equivalents though (and the BP version is only 97 octane). So I'm now running my Cav on Esso Supreme - the incre...

Re: Octane plugs
My C25XE V6 also has the brown A octane plug and I've started using Esso Supreme 98 octane petrol - mainly because it is claimed to be free of ethanol. I haven't noticed any difference in performance over standard 95 octane fuel but I too would be interested in any views on whether changing the octa...

Re: Stupid modern cars!!
Even when you can get a list of items in a service on a newish car from its manufacturer, if you look closely at it, it's a long list of "checks", and about the only thing they actually do is change the engine oil & filter. And the charge for this "service" is typically aroun...

Re: Stupid modern cars!!
Yes, they seem to be making modern cars increasingly user-unfriendly, with no engine oil dipsticks, no auto-transmission dipsticks (and therefore no way to add fluid to the transmission except when the car is up on a garage lift), batteries that need "programming" when they are replaced an...

Yes, the "V6 trim" (as in my May 1993 example) was very similar to the CDX trim but omitted the alloy wheels (it had ordinary 15" steel wheels with "special" plastic covers) and did not have air conditioning or heated front seats. I'd have liked the alloy wheels but I'm not ...

Re: Vectra C Front Fuel Feed Pipe leak
The flexible pipe on the left of the picture looks newer, so I'd guess that, because it didn't have the crimped-on union required, the previous owner just cut the old pipe and grafted the stub of it and its original union onto the new pipe (but by the looks of it badly!). As said previously you shou...

195/60r15 are very easy to get hold of Rob, you've got no worries there. They are actually a bit cheaper than 195/60r14 as well. I've got a full set of Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance tyres on my Diplomat that I had fitted last year. But a full range of brands are available including, Avon, Cont...

Re: C20NE 8v to C20XE 16v
Talk of porous castings reminds me of an Austin Maxi that I bought new in 1981, having previously had a very good secondhand one. Oil consumption on the new Maxi was terrible (about a pint every 100 miles or so) and after much to-ing and fo-ing with BLMC I eventually got them to pay for an engine re...

Re: V6 engine coolant bridge and temp sensors
Thanks for the info. I'd assumed that this sensor was some kind of variable-resistance-with-temp device, but clearly it must just switch from off to on when the temp exceeds a set level.

Hi mate, i think i had a post on this exact same sensor on the coolant bridge last year with my v6 cav. I tried everywhere for one and they cannot be got! Re: V6 engine coolant bridge and temp sensors
I've now established that the part number of the temp sensor/banjo bolt is 90462372. An online search has shown that the only supplier (outside Russia) that has this item is located in Germany (Mahler). This would not normally be a problem but, because of EU-applied customs issues following Brexit, ...

Re: V6 engine coolant bridge and temp sensors
Thanks for the advice, and I can now understand why the coolant bridge on the Omega doesn't have the third sensor, since I presume it doesn't need the alternator fan and electric water pump. My alternator fan is still working but comes on at erratic times - especially when the engine is off, when it...

V6 engine coolant bridge and temp sensors
After looking at the V6 engine setup in Cavaliers, Calibras and Omegas, the coolant bridge piece that sits in the V and connects the cooling channels in the 2 heads seems to be a different design in the Omega from the Cavalier and Calibra. On the Omega, it has connections for two coolant temperature...

I think in the US thev've been using E10 for years, and most classics do ok on it, although I do agree with you Chris just too much green virtue signalling going on, it's getting mental! Yes, the US has had E10 "regular" gasoline for some years and this is around 90 octane (or in some sta...

Yes, I also thought that it was only the later engines that had the revised backplates - which also have a fully flanged adjuster pulley, instead of the older flangeless-on-the-outside one. However, after protracted correspondence with Gates, they insist that the revised backplate and fully flanged ...
