Re: 1.7td pressurizing

I was told that with a diesel (any make) to tick it over with the cooler cap off to look for a steady supply of bubbles rising in the cooler tank as a sign of head gasket leak/blow I also read that with vauahall petrol cars if cooler caps leaks with age it will cause air in the system and various pr...

Re: Wet floor

The good news is itis a very common fault and the first place to look and he usual solution is simple. With both Cav and Vectra dirt/leaves etc block up the drains at the exteranl bottom of the windscreen near the wiper arms and wiper motor etc. So we start by looking at the vent/drain/grid each sid...

Anyone had experience if this universal size cover fits?

My CDX is sorn under a tree so i had better use a car cover. But I find the universal size of car cover i get told to use on my 95 cav cdx hatch ecotec is:- 480 (L) x 175 (W) x 120 (H). The original VX manual supplied with the cav when new says the this Cav hatchback is:- 435.2 (L) x 187.6 (W) x 140...

two very deep dents from stones thrown at door

As my x20xev cav 95 is parked up, any ideas on the cost of a good standard of body repair for diamond black? While the car is parked up SORN someone has stood next to it and thrown two stones at the rear passenger door and done so very hard, to dent the door deeply for an inch around the point of ea...

weight of engines ?

has anyone come across the weight of the various engines and also gearboxes for example the MG midget clubs know the exact weight of engines and boxes and potential swap options so most alternative engines for a midget weigh for example 216lb (k seriies) to 272lb (fiat) without gearboxes. i be inter...

Could be good news for Cavs ??

I reckon the biiggest draw back of a cav is the road tax. It seems to now be suggested from many sources that the coalition govenment intends (so not certain until it happens) to get rid of road tax by the next general election in May 2015 two years time. The december 2012 edition of car mechanics m...

Re: Cam sensor X20XEV Wiggling the wire issue

thanks Plantec. Using the cam sensor swapped off the parked up vectra, the cav is running great. the stall or chug as it was going has stopped. The ECU light comes on about three seconds after starting and if I switch the key off and on too fast for it to stall, the ECU light goes out and stays for ...

Re: Cam sensor X20XEV Wiggling the wire issue

Thanks plantec. I had a cam sensor on our x20xev vectra that is parked up, and so did a quick swap. The only question is that from what you said the pointer on the cam belt tensioner pulsates something like once a second, rythmically to the movement of the cam belt by about 1mm or 2mm at teh sharp e...

Re: Cam sensor X20XEV Wiggling the wire issue

At the moment I have the cav parked in a place where it is not easy to work on he car. I took the air filter box, alt drive belt and cam belt outer cover off to look at the cam belt. The cam belt kit looks very good indeed withe tensioner needle at 9 out of 10 in the gap in the exact place it should...

Re: Cam sensor X20XEV Wiggling the wire issue

Would anyone know the latest views with the quality of Motaquip, Gates and Quinton Hazell timing belt kits ? I would not have used these when I bought the cavalier in 2003 as these makes were regarded as inferior for such a serious job. For example Would the rollers be of cheap quality/ Would not wa...

Re: Cam sensor X20XEV Wiggling the wire issue

Thanks plantec, my mistake i meant to say 92 cam sensor. It sometimes throws up a 19 code as well but i think that is the usual belt flex. The belt tensioner would make sense. The dealer put a new one on in either April or August 2003. I bought it Sept 2003. done 40k miles since i bought a new cam b...

Cam sensor X20XEV Wiggling the wire issue

As we are aware an EML coming on or getting a fault code, does not mean the sensor has failed but the signal has failed and so the fault code could mean the wire has failed, the sensor has failed or or another fault. I have a cavalier CDX 1995 with an X20XEV engine. On the X20XEV there is a well kno...

Re: putting Vx Semi 10 40 in someone else diesel

thanks for the replies. Yes - the Rover swipe makes me happy. These Rovers did not sell well when new, or second hand. So when looking for a quick bargain they can be great. The more rover swipes the cheaper these cars get. I got this one, - a clean 1999 model with 100k miles goes great, averages 45...

Re: putting Vx Semi 10 40 in someone else diesel

i think you are right on all of what you say. I understrand the 10 40 oil will go in diesel but it is wise to check more widely for using in the rover, so that why I am posting in case someone knows, maybe from doing it themselves i read somewhere that the rover diesel engine in the 400 in late 1990...

Re: putting Vx Semi 10 40 in someone else diesel

the diesel is the old perkins but with a 1990s update to the design, so it does not use fully synthetic. 15 40 is recommended by the manufacturer and 10 40 used by those who know about running these engines. i just need to check any adverse effect of GM semi 10 40 meant for petrol engines going in t...

putting Vx Semi 10 40 in someone else diesel

A releaviue needs to change his oil asap and a bit skint (or just tight) . Does anyone know if it is safe to put my GM semi 10 40 oil in his 1998 rover 2.0 diesel (turbo)? He drives the rover TD as he was driving an X20XEV lpg factory fitted by GM koltec, but as he too often drives screaming the rev...

Carry six foot square fence on Cav roof with GM bars?

Do you reckon it is legal to carry those cheap light six foot square fence panels on a cav roof? Using the GM roof bars. The over hang on each side I am wondering about. A cav is 5 feet 6 inches wide so tayts ounds not so bad, but that is includng the mirrors so six feet may look a bit of a big over...

Re: F18WR/F18CR/F20????

i reckon the 1.6 is the best cav, snd both of my 1.6 were brilliant on the motorway. i drove my 1989 cav around europe in 1993 and found it would averaged 35mpg at around 100 mph and keep that speed easily. and bought it on 70,000 miles and never needed to even take the head off that engine, was 190...

Re: Converting a cavalier to lpg? Good/bad idea

i looked at this as we have had LPG factory fitted vectras and wondered about swapping the vauxhall factory kit onto the cav. Unless you do high milles it can be difficult to justify, - some say better to buy a diesel as lpg has a high cost to maintain. LPG kits need a service every two years or so....
